Australia hosted the first ever Asian Senior Volleyball Championships as a joint tournament for men and women, with games being played regionally in Victoria, before the final matches in Melbourne.
Both the Australian men’s and women’s teams have competed in every tournament since then, and Australia has hosted one more tournament in Perth, the 1991 Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championships.
The Men have won 5 medals in all, their first a Bronze in 1997, followed by two Silver medals in 1999 and 2001. In 2007 the team won their first Gold and Asian Championship title. And in 2019 won their third Silver medal.
The Women’s best result, having not won a medal at this tournament, are two 4th places in 1975 and 1979.
